NAME: JAMES KAMP

AGE: 18

LOCATION: ADELAIDE

ARTISTRY: WRITER

James Kamp. Law and International Studies student at the University of Adelaide. Vegan. Very tall. A jawline that could carve up a Sunday roast. Electric blue eyes. These are James’ fundamental traits, but there is so much more beneath this that is, for the most part, hidden.

James is a writer, and devotes most of his time to both poetry and novel writing. He embodies sophistication well beyond his years and an incredible intellect. As an aspiring writer myself, I am absolutely in awe of his work.

He embodies sophistication well beyond his years and an incredible intellect.

James’ poetry share similarities to Sylvia Plath in its vivid imagery and unconventionality, and Anne Sexton in its f***ed up beauty. Common themes incorporated into his poetry include relationships, mental health, dysfunctionality and identity. His poetry is rich in nature, analogies and metaphors, and the structure changes from poem to poem, keeping the reader intrigued. If you were to categorise his poetry, it would be confessional and modernist.

He is in the process of creating a publication called UNTITLED, which will be “a poetic memoir of freedom, despair, enlightenment & their antitheses.” Whilst this isn’t yet published, a selection of his poems can be found on his Instagram. My favourite of the few is his poem ‘Team’;

Whilst James’ poetry is raw and real, his fictional writing is a stark contrast. James is focusing on two high-fantasy novels, one which is solely independent and another in collaboration with his co-writer L.R. McGee. The mutuality between the two separate novels is that both are grounded by the same mythopoeic idea and land. Ìthien, a fictional universe set in a medievalesque period, is where these narratives take place.

the key protagonists … are plunged into an era of ancient magic, unprecedented kinship and ungodly violence.

James’ independent novel is based during the dawn of the Fourth Age, and is centred on tracking the events that unfold through the lives of a handful of characters. Through the eventuating clash of civilisations and the haunting portrayal of all that is accursed and ethereal, “the protagonists grapple with their own notions of loyalty, war, destiny and piety”. From both old foes and new, the power and safety of the key protagonists is challenged as they are plunged into an era of ancient magic, unprecedented kinship and ungodly violence.

Aside from UNTITLED, his novel and other personal creative endeavours, James and another young writer L.R. McGee are in the process of co-writing a novel titled “Sun”. This is the first of three anticipated novels (Sun, Moon and Destiny), which all focus on twin characters living in the north-eastern realm of Ylaia. The male character is written by James and the female character is written by his counterpart, and the novels follow their quest through the malefic rule of a tyrant king.

Ìthien, a fictional universe set in a medievalesque period, is where these narratives take place.

Alongside writing “Sun”, James and his co-writer have collaboratively produced an Instagram called The Archives of Ìthien, to establish the context of the novels they are creating. Ìthien is a medieval, supernatural world similar to Tolkien’s ‘Middle Earth’, Martin’s ‘Westeros’ and Paolini’s ‘Alagaësia’.
